August 29, 2011

Good morning! It's The Nerd's Almanac for Monday, August 29, 2011.

On this date in 1831, Michael Faraday discovered electromagnetic induction, which allows us to have such things as motors and generators and transformers, oh my!

Today is the birthday of Charles Kettering, born in 1876. He was an automotive engineer, working at Delco and General Motors. And he was a prolific inventor, holder of 140 patents. If his name sounds familiar, it's because he co-founded the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center with a goal of applying industrial research techniques to cancer research.

And it's the birthday of Robert Rubin, former U.S. Secretary of the Treasury -- because economists are nerds, too! He also served as Director of the National Economic Council and currently serves as Co-Chairman of the Council of Foreign Relations.

Here is a quote for today...
"I agree with what the Chairman Greenspan said whatever it is that he did say."
-- Robert Rubin

And that's the almanac for today. Nerds of the world, we salute you!
