August 28, 2011

Good morning! It's The Nerd's Almanac for Sunday, August 28, 2011.

This is the date that William Herschel discovered the moon Enceladus of Saturn in 1789. It was the sixth of Saturn's five dozen or so moons to be discovered and it is also the sixth largest of them. Coincidence? Not really, when you think about it.

This date is the anniversary of the publication of the first issue of Scientific American, whose pages have been enjoyed by nerds for 166 years now.

And on this date in 1898, at least according to today's Wikipedia page, Pepsi-Cola got its name. The date may be a little fuzzy -- or maybe a little fizzy. But when I see the word "Pepsi" I still think of some nerd history that would happen some 85 years later -- and yes, it involves Apple.

Today is the birthday of Jack Kirby, born in 1917. He was a pioneer in comics. He worked most notably for Marvel Comics and co-created such titles as Captain AmericaThe Fantastic FourThe Incredible HulkUncanny X-MenThe Mighty Thor, and The Avengers.

Here is a quote for today...
"Perfectionists are their own devils."
-- Jack Kirby

And that's the almanac for today. Nerds of the world, we salute you!
