August 30, 2011

Good morning! It's The Nerd's Almanac for Tuesday, August 30, 2011.

Today marks the anniversary of the first flight of Space Shuttle Discovery, which made its maiden voyage on this date in 1984. Retired earlier this year, Discovery is planned to be on display at the Smithsonian's Air and Space Museum.

It's the birthday of Richard Stone, a British economist known as the "father of national income accounting" and working on models to track economics on national and international scales, for which he was awarded a Nobel prize in 1984.

And it's Warren Buffett's birthday! Considered "one of the most successful investors in the world" he is also one of the world's most generous philanthropists, pledging to give away 99 percent of his fortune to charitable causes.

Here is a quote for today...
"You only find out who is swimming naked when the tide goes out."
-- Warren Buffett, Berkshire Hathaway 2000 Chairman's Letter

And that's the almanac for today. Nerds of the world, we salute you!
