September 1, 2011

Good morning! It's The Nerd's Almanac for Thursday, September 1, 2011.

Today is the anniversary of the 1902 release of Le Voyage dans la lune. This French silent film by Georges Méliès was black and white, ran fourteen minutes, and was the first science fiction film. Generations of sci-fi fans say merci!

This date marks the founding in 1906 of the International Federation of Intellectual Property Attorneys. Love 'em or hate 'em, now you know how long they've been conspiring amongst themselves.

On this date in 1979, Pioneer 11 had its close encounter with Saturn, performing photography and instrumentation and paving the way for the future visit of the Voyager probes.

And today is the birthday of Francis William Aston, born in Birmingham, England in 1877. Aston was a chemist and physicist and is most noted for his work in mass spectrometry and its use in demonstrating the whole number rule, for which he was awarded the Nobel prize in 1922.

Here is a quote for today...
"The whole of the hydrogen on the earth might be transformed at once and the success of the experiment published at large to the universe as a new star."
-- Francis William Aston

And that's the almanac for today. Nerds of the world, we salute you!
