August 20, 2011

Welcome! It's The Nerd's Almanac for Saturday, August 20, 2011.

Today is the anniversary of the first publication of Charles Darwin's theory of evolution and natural selection. The theory was published in 1858 in The Journal of the Proceedings of the Linnean Society of London.

And it was on this date in 1920 that the first commercial radio station, WWJ-AM (then known as 8MK) first began broadcasting. They were the first radio station to air regular news reports and sports play-by-play.

In 1975, NASA launched Viking 1 on a mission to perform analysis of Mars. Then in 1977, it was on this date that NASA launched Voyager 2 on a mission to explore the outer solar system.

It's the birthday today of Sylvester McCoy, best known as the seventh actor to play the role of TV's Doctor Who, which he did between 1987 and 1989.

Here's a quote from the end of the original series:
"There are worlds out there where the sky is burning, and the sea's asleep, and the rivers dream. People made of smoke, and cities made of song. Somewhere there's danger, somewhere there’s injustice, and somewhere else the tea's getting cold. Come on, Ace — we’ve got work to do!"
-- Doctor Who

And that's the almanac for today. Nerds of the world, we salute you!
