August 18, 2011

Good morning, and welcome to The Nerd's Almanac for August 18, 2011.

Today is a good day to discover something, and it would enjoy the company of helium (1868 by Jules Janssen) and Phobos, the larger of Mars' two moons (1877 by Asaph Hall).

It's the 50th birthday today of Timothy Geithner, U.S. Secretary of the Treasury. Nerd? Yes, nerd! Quoting Maureen Dowd of the New York Times, Geithner is the "hot nerd tapped by Obama to fix the colossal mess left by. . . ." I believe she was referring to the previous administration.

Let's see if we can find a quote from today's birthday boy...
"Some think that by preparing to deal with crises you make them more likely. I think the wiser judgment is the contrary. In this area at least, if you want peace or stability, it's better to prepare for war or instability." -- Timothy Geithner

That's the Almanac for today. And nerds of the world -- even you hot nerds -- we salute you!
