August 21, 2011

Good morning! It's The Nerd's Almanac for Sunday, August 21, 2011.

It was on this date in 1888 that the adding machine was patented by William Burroughs. You've come a long way, baby! I'm pretty sure my Droid 2 has at least two calculators installed on it!

It's the birthday of Augustin Cauchy (born in 1789), the French mathematician famous for complex function theory and other things I cannot even begin to understand.

And today is Sergey Brin's birthday! He was born in Moscow in 1973. A few years later, he and Larry Page founded a little company, you might have heard of it, named GOOGLE. If I were even the least bit artistic, I would draw a little doodle to mark this special occasion. Maybe next year! :)

Here is a quote for today...
"Obviously everyone wants to be successful, but I want to be looked back on as being very innovative, very trusted and ethical and ultimately making a big difference in the world. "
-- Sergey Brin

And that's the almanac for today. Nerds of the world, we salute you!
