September 6, 2011

Good morning! It's The Nerd's Almanac for Tuesday, September 6, 2011.

On this date in 1522, the Victoria, under the command of Juan Sebastián Elcano, arrived in Spain, becoming the first ship to circumnavigate the globe. The Victoria was part of Ferdinand Magellan's expedition, but Magellan himself had been killed four months earlier in the Philippines.

It's the birthday of John Dalton, born in England in 1766. He was a chemist, meteorologist and physicist. He is best known as a pioneer in atomic theory and for his research in color blindness.

And it's the birthday of John James Rickard Macleod, born in Scotland in 1876. He was a physician and physiologist, and is best known as a co-discoverer of insulin, for which he received a Nobel prize.

Here is a quote for today...
"The Church says that the Earth is flat, but I know that it is round. For I have seen the shadow of the earth on the moon and I have more faith in the Shadow than in the Church."
-- Mis-attributed to Ferdinand Magellan by Robert Green Ingersoll

And that's the almanac for today. Nerds of the world, we salute you!
