On this date in 1888, George Eastman received a patent for his film camera and roll film invention. Not quite sure who that is? Well let's just say it's not much of a coincidence that the name Kodak was trademarked that very same day.
And today is the anniversary of a little company called Google, incorporated on this date in 1998. They were based in a garage in Melo Park, California, so they had a choice to be a company or a rock band. I'm glad they made the choice they did, but have to wonder just what kind of sound they'd have had.
It's the birthday of Martin Wiberg, born in Sweden in 1826. He invented a device that could print logarithmic tables, making him one of the early pioneers in the computer field.
And today is the birthday of Clive Granger, born in Wales in 1934. He worked in applied statistics and economics, and received the Nobel Prize for his contributions to time series analysis of economic data.
It's also the birthday of a more modern computing pioneer. John McCarthy coined the term "artificial intelligence" and designed the Lisp programming language often used for AI applications.
Here is a quote for today...
"What we do during our working hours determines what we have; what we do in our leisure hours determines what we are."
-- George Eastman
And that's the almanac for today. Nerds of the world, we salute you!
