September 12, 2011

Good morning! It's The Nerd's Almanac for Day, September 12, 2011.

Today is the anniversary of three space launches!

On this date in 1959, it was Lunik II that was launched, on a mission to make contact with the surface of the Moon.

In 1966, it was Gemini 11 that blasted off. Dick Gordon and Pete Conrad docked their craft with an Agena spacecraft. They also performed space walks.

And in 1992, the Space Shuttle Endeavour was launched on a science mission -- it was the 50th mission of the Space Shuttle program.

Today is Yao Ming's birthday! He's an NBA basketball player, and at 7'6" was a perfect spokesman for Apple's smallest PowerBook. Click here to see the ad on YouTube.

Here is a quote for today...
"Ambition leads me not only farther than any other man has been before me, but as far as I think it possible for man to go."
-- James Cook

And that's the almanac for today. Nerds of the world, we salute you!
