September 10, 2011

Good morning! It's The Nerd's Almanac for Saturday, September 10, 2011.

On this date way back in 2008, the Large Hadron Collider was powered up for the first time at CERN. Yes, the people that invented the Internet also created the "biggest scientific experiment in history"!

It's the birthday of Arthur Compton, born in Ohio in 1892. He was a physicist and studied x-ray scattering. He discovered what is now known as the Compton effect, the "particle concept of electromagnetic radiation."

It's also the birthday of Waldo Semon, born in Alabama in 1989. He was a chemist and is best known for inventing vinyl, the "second most used plastic" in the world.

And it's the birthday of Gunpei Yokoi, born in Kyoto, Japan in 1941. He was a game designer for Nintendo and worked on such games as Donkey Kong, Mario Brothers, Kid Icarus, and Metroid before creating the Game Boy in the late 1980s.

Here is a quote for today...
"Yokoi asked his boss, 'What should I make?' Nintendo chief executive Hiroshi Yamauchi replied, 'Something great.'"
-- David Sheff, Game Over Press Start To Continue

And that's the almanac for today. Nerds of the world, we salute you!
