August 9, 2011

Welcome! It's the Nerd's Almanac for Tuesday, August 9, 2011.

On this date in 1892, Thomas Edison received a patent for a two-way telegraph. That seems pretty high-tech to me!

And in science, it was on this date in 2001 that President George W. Bush announced support for federal funding of embryonic stem cell research.

I've selected a few birthdays to celebrate today.

David Huffman was born on this date in 1925. He is known for the Huffman coding algorithm for lossless compression of data. He died in 1999.

It's Marvin Minsky's birthday today. He is a professor at MIT in computer science -- a co-founder of MIT's computer science and artificial intelligence lab.

And it's the birthday of Gillian Anderson -- TV's Dana Sculley from the X-Files.

Well that's the Nerd's Almanac for today. Nerds of the world, we salute you.
