Today is the anniversary of the opening in 1914 of the Panama Canal, a miraculous engineering marvel that linked the Atlantic and Pacific oceans.
Also on this date in 1977, the Big Ear radio telescope -- used to search for extraterrestrial radio signals -- received the "Wow! signal".
